No, we aren’t in the weight-loss business!  The name Chunky Gal comes from the mountain range that that the stable sits at the base of, Chunky Gal Mountain. The mountains were named after an old Cherokee Indian story of a chief’s daughter that did not want to be married off to the man her father had selected and so she ran away into the mountains. Chunky Gal Mountain was the last place she was seen.

Chunky Gal Stables offers trail rides, lessons, training and boarding.  We offer 1-, 2- and 4-hour trail rides through the beautiful Nantahala National Forest, with several different options for trails depending on experience level and scenery.  We can accommodate all experience levels from the first-time rider all the way to the most experienced riders. All rides are guided by one of our friendly and knowledgeable trail guides.  Our experienced team will choose a mount for you to that best

matches your experience, skills and abilities on horseback.  We can customize your riding experience with private rides, all-day rides, overnight trips, and lunch/dinner rides.

We are excited to announce that we are in the process of exploring some new trail options through the surrounding mountains.  We’re thrilled that so many folks come back year after year to ride with us, and we wanted to offer some new and different trail options so there’s always something new to see. Ask about our new trails when you make your reservation!

We are open 7 days a week from 8:00am – 5:00pm. We love for kids to ride as well, so just ask about ages when making your reservation. Give us a holler at 828-389-4175 and we’ll be more than happy to help you saddle up and hit the trail!

"Heaven is high and earth wide. If you ride three feet higher above the ground than other men, you will know what that means."

Tommie Alexander was born and raised just a few miles from where the Trackrock Campground & Stables is located today. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and volunteered to fight for his country in WWII where he proudly served in Germany until his discharge in 1952. In 1952, he brought his bride, Martha, back to Union County and purchased the 250-acre farm that would become Trackrock Campground & Stables. Tommie & Martha farmed cattle, chickens, hogs and various crops including Union County’s beloved sorghum syrup; and raised their family of four children, Mary, Linda, Frank and Sonya.

With incredible vision and foresight in seeing a future of tourism in the then economically challenged farming community in the north Georgia mountains, Tommie and Martha turned their family farm into an 18-site campground for tent camping and built a small riding stable. The Alexanders have continued to make improvements over for more than 50 years.  Today the campground has 100 shaded, level, private campsites for tents, pop-ups and RVs. There are also five fully furnished cabins for those who would rather rock on the porch than rough it.  Trackrock Stables, under the ownership of Sonya Alexander, has grown to 60 horses (give or take!) for trail riding, lesson horses and horses boarded on the property.

The Alexander family continues to own and operate their family-oriented campground today and looks forward to bringing you and your family many years of wonderful memories.
